Native across Europe and West Asia, this biennial is especially beloved by bees. Growing to at least 2 feet, the spires of bright blue flowers make glorious spreads of blue in midsummer along the coasts and sandy areas of inland Britain. The Welsh, Tafod y Bwch (billy goat’s tongue) is, I suppose, an attempt to describe the blue flowers with their protruding red anthers. The scaly stems earn the allusion in the English common name to our dear venomous snake.
